How to determine mold problems?

2/15/2018 (Permalink)

Inspect the Area Visually

Sometimes it’s possible to see spots of mold on walls or ceilings. They can be any color, but they are most commonly black, green, white, or yellow. Mold has a fuzzy or scaly texture. Small spots of mold are the first clue you have a problem.

Larger colonies hide out of site. They grow in places you don’t think to check. It’s also common to find mold in ventilation systems or along the edges of windows. Mold can grow right on top of dust but often sits undetected out of your sight.

Do the Sniff Test

When a mold colony is of sufficient size, it exhausts gasses that give off a musty odor. This mildew smell is distinct and may be the only clue you have a problem. If you detect the same unpleasant moldy odor in the same area repeatedly, you may have an invisible mold problem.
